Understanding Free Marketing

Maximizing Resources: Spend Wisely

Most small businesses don’t have huge budgets, and each marketing dollar must be spent wisely. Free marketing enables you to reach potential customers without stretching your resources thin. Instead of traditional ads, consider investing time in strategies that foster genuine, cost-free connections with your audience.

Building Genuine Connections Without the Price Tag

Free marketing strategies, like networking and communicating regularly with your email list, tend to feel more personal than paid ads. When you’re interacting with your audience directly and organically, they feel more connected to your brand. Over time, these genuine interactions can lead to a loyal customer base.

Competing with Big Brands on a Small Business Budget

Large companies may have more funds, but with strategic free marketing, small businesses can level the playing field. By being nimble and customer-focused, you can attract customers and develop a unique voice that stands out even in a crowded marketplace.

1. Set Up Your Google Business Profile

One of the most powerful, cost-free tools for local businesses is a Google Business Profile. This listing helps your business appear in local searches, map results, and even on Google’s homepage for relevant searches. To make the most of this profile, ensure that your business name, address, phone number, hours, and photos are all up to date. Encourage satisfied customers to leave reviews to boost your visibility.

Full details on optimizing your Google Business Profile can be found in my Local Visibility Trifecta course in the Small Business Marketing Hacks community.

2. Optimize Your Website

Do some simple keyword research, then optimize your website headline and SEO meta data. Make the headline benefit driven. I also recommend using a future paced image to show the end results your customer desires. Don't forget to include a clear CTA above the fold to drive conversions. There's much more that can be done, but this is a good start for more organic traffic and higher conversions.

3. Load Up on Reviews

Google loves businesses that regularly get reviews on their profile, and regularly respond to those reviews. So many small businesses pass up the opportunity to get more reviews. I see businesses all the time with 20-30 reviews (sometimes as low as none!). All you have to do is ask your customers for reviews and make it easy for them to leave one. I highly recommend only focusing on Google reviews as this is where most people search for your services. I have a system I set up for my clients that completely automates the review process to make sure you are maximizing not only the number of reviews, but the number of 5 star reviews.

Leverage Community and Networking

Attend Local Events (In Person or Virtually)

Connecting with people face-to-face (or virtually) can create a powerful network effect. Attend local networking events, business expos, and community gatherings. These events allow you to meet potential customers and other business owners who may refer clients to you. Local events often cost nothing but can be a great way to build relationships. Look up your local BNI chapter, Chamber of Commerce, or trade group.

Partner with Other Local Businesses

Collaborate with complementary local businesses to reach a larger audience. For example, a bakery might partner with a coffee shop, offering discounts to customers who visit both locations. This type of partnership is mutually beneficial, costs nothing, and helps both businesses reach new customers.

Offer Free Workshops or Demonstrations

Offering free workshops is a great way to showcase your expertise while attracting potential customers. For example, a fitness studio might offer a free workout class, or a home renovation business could host a demonstration on quick DIY fixes. Workshops give customers a taste of what you offer and build trust without any pressure to purchase.

Essential Free Marketing Tactics for Small Businesses

Word-of-Mouth Marketing

Encourage satisfied customers to recommend you to their friends and family. Word-of-mouth marketing is incredibly effective and doesn’t cost a dime. Consider implementing a referral program or simply asking loyal customers to spread the word.

Email Marketing (The Most Overlooked Marketing Channel There Is)

Email marketing continues year over year to be the highest ROI marketing channel there is with average returns of 44X ROI. Email marketing is super cost-effective and super impactful (when done right). Set up a welcome email sequence, send out occasional newsletters, or provide value-packed content to your subscribers. Many email providers offer free versions, so you can get started without paying. (The Systomesh software also includes extensive email marketing features -cough- -cough-)

There's so many strategies on this alone, that it could be it's own course. Course modules on this coming soon to

Remember Facebook thing I said towards the top? Yeah, let's talk about that now...

I see too many business owners wasting time posting to social media only to get one like per post from their grandma. And probably only 5 views. Don't get me wrong, organic social media can work great if you do it right. But it takes a super engaged following and consistency. The problem I see is most businesses have neither of these. Now, obviously you have to start to gain a following. But most people just post randomly, and the algorithm barely shows it to anybody. It's a waste of time if you don't have the rest of what I discussed sorted out first.

But if you're dedicated to making it work, it's best to pick one channel to focus on (unless you have the super cool free tool I mention below in the next section). Make high value, engaging posts - consistently. If you post value, people will follow and actually care what you have to say. If you keep posting random salesy posts once a month, nobody will see anything - and when they do, they don't see a reason to give you a second look in the future.

Whether social media is your thing, or you want more immediate results, here's some no-cost tools that can help you out:

Whether social media is your thing, or you want more immediate results, here's some no-cost tools that can help you out:

Free Social Media Tools

There are plenty of social media tools that make posting, scheduling, and analyzing your content easier. Finding the free ones is a little trickier. Meta Business Suite is good if you're only posting to Facebook and Instagram. By completely unbiased personal favorite is the Social Planner built into my Systomesh software suite. Did I mention I give this away for free?! You can post, schedule, and analyze posts all at once across all your social media channels and all from one dashboard. This includes Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X (Twitter), Google Business Profile, Pinterest, TikTok, and even YouTube.

Email and CRM Solutions

Again, Systomesh is a great no-to-low cost solution for CRM and email marketing functionality. It combines everything you need to run your business into one software. I think Hubspot has a free CRM plan you can check out. And MailerLite is a good free option for smaller email lists.
